The Third Coast Festival Listening Room presents the original Lemon Tree radio documentary, originally aired on WHYY’s Fresh Air in 1999. This forty-minute audio documentary will be “screened” and WBEZ’s Gwen Macsai will host a question-and-answer session with Sandy about the documentary and the book, which will also be available for purchase.

Firoozeh Dumas is the bestselling author of Funny In Farsi : A Memoir of Growing Up Iranian in America. You may have heard her on NPR or read her work in the New York Times. She is an expert at helping us look at the funny side of life while reminding us of our shared humanity. Her next book, Laughing Without an Accent will be published in May 2008 by Random House. She lives in the bay area with her family.
Rita Golden Gelman, Brandeis ‘58, is the author of more than seventy children’s books. In 1987, after a divorce, she decided to live her dream. She sold everything she owned and took off to discover and live other ways of life. Twenty-one years later, she still has no possessions and no permanent address. In her book, Tales of a Female Nomad (2001), she writes about her adventures and shares the joy of connecting with people all over the world.
Sandy Tolan is an award winning journalist, teacher and documentary radio producer. He is the author of The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew and the Heart of the Middle East. Based on his award winning documentary for NPR’s Fresh Air about a Palestinian man, an Israeli woman and the common bond: a stone home between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. He is presently teaching Journalism at USC.
Lalita Tademy left her postion as a VP in Silicon Valley to become an award winning author. Her novels combine historical reconstruction with unforgettable story telling. Her first novel Cane River was an Oprah summer read in 2001. It explores the author’s roots from slavery through the civil war and into the Jim Crow south. Red River explores Reconstruction and the lives of generations on her father’s side. She lives in the bay area with her family.
Caryn Huberman Yacowitz returns this year as our moderator. She is the award winning author of 15 children’s books, poetry and musical theater. Also a playwright for adults, one of Caryn’s short plays, PIG ME, opens April 4 at Pear Avenue Theater in Mountain View. She lives in the Bay Area with her family
